Careers in Financial Planning

Many people have asked me over the years about careers in financial planning. Becoming a financial advisor may be one of the last things most people are thinking about these days. But the truth is, this may be one of the best times ever to start a finance career. As with investing, doing the opposite of what the rest of the crowd is doing is often the best thing you can do. It may go against your gut feeling, but taking a contrarian approach can be a very good thing.

If you enjoy working with people and building long-term relationships, then you will love this job. But becoming a financial advisor is not for the weak of heart. When you are responsible for other people's money you need to be able to handle some doses of stress at times. I tell people that I used to have a full head of hair when I got into this business 14 years ago (which I did!). Now whether it was the market corrections or my 5 kids at home that made my hair fall out, I can't really tell. But the stress can be killer at times. It's definitely much easier when the market is up and everyone is making money. When the market is up clients are happy, they think you're a genius, account values are going up, and you think you're a genius. But when the markets are down, clients are worried or upset, and people's life savings is evaporating, your income is declining, and you may start to wonder if you should be mowing people's lawns instead.

Not to worry! As with any career or any business, you have to take the good with the bad. And I would say that there is a lot more good with careers in financial planning than bad. But you will have to decide on that. Browse through the links below to find out more about becoming a financial advisor.
